Malaika Khadijaa is a Canadian-based artist that takes a western route with her sound, bringing indie and R&B together in an agreeable harmony without disregarding the rich African heritage she comes from.
Her origin has been traced to Eastern Africa and she does not fail in paying homage to her culture by referencing it in songs like Nyota which means “star” in Swahili. “Soothing” is an easy label for her music. Malaika manages to use her euphonious voice to put the mind at ease. She boasts a wide range of singing styles that can accommodate a slow or upbeat pace, adapting easily to any scene.
Regardless, her specialty is the slow R&B style, which flows emotionally over lax instrumentals. She sings mostly about love (the euphoria of it all and the post-trauma of heartbreak), and often makes use of the spoken word genre to pass her message across.
Malaika isn’t without her accolades, having been featured on songs like Love Is A Losing Game by THEHONESTGUY; a clear testament of how she can refine an R&B song even as a backup voice. She also appears on Yamen Yamen, an album by DrummrAfrica in a song called “Take It Easy”.
Millennials across Africa and in the diaspora have the same picture of what the world should look like. We are documenting it in the coolest ways 🤘
