At the break of the new year, Burna Boy fans in Lagos gathered to make cheers to their surviving 2022 and loudly scream lyrics that proclaim hate for the government, the beauty of women’s gluteal muscles and the sadness that comes with being “alone”. But they had to wait 9 hours before they could get any of these.
The concert which was slated to begin by 6pm didn’t even have a completed stage until about midnight, and Burna Boy wasn’t seen or heard from until 3am. And when he came on the stage, his first words have been considered to be insulting by most people.
Here are 5 things other artistes should learn from that incident and how they can avoid the internet backlash that came after it.
Keep your mental in check
You cannot just wake up and be angry at people that have done nothing to you. From time to time, do a mental health check up to make sure that you’ve completely healed from your last break up.
Don’t have concerts at all
If you will only show up at your concert to rain curses on your fans instead of the organizers who have the fault, then don’t even host a show at all in the first place. Just make your music and sell them on the internet. That should be enough money to feed you and your people.
An internet apology doesn’t cut!
It has been sort of a regular occurrence for celebrities to misbehave in public, only to come on the internet to draft out a well-curated three-paragraphed apology that leaves everyone even agree than before it was written. Learn to watch your actions as much as you can, so that apologies like those are avoided.
Music really is a division of labour
There are the organizers, there is you who is supposed to supply the music, there are the backup singers, and then there’s security. So instead of kick people in the face or any body parts at all, maybe you should simply allow security do their part of the labour circle. Maybe.
Keep being the bad boy you are
Really just damn the advices in 1-4 and act like the entire world revolves around you. So instead of give the very people who made you who you are – and who first listened to your music – a show and apologize for not showing up on time, remind them how they used you and your mother for banter on Twitter and why they don’t even deserve your love in the first place.
Itty can be caught studying African pop culture, writing about it or hosting a relationship podcast. When he's not doing any of these, then he's definitely at a bar, getting mocktail.
