2023 was a tough year for some, and bliss for some others. Regardless, a new year has come with fresh hopes and resolutions that might never be met.
However, we think you might need these quotes to “hold body” as the new year rolls out. They are from some of our favourite interviews last year and the team thinks they are profound enough for you to take one or two things out of.
Let us know which of them you will be holding on to in the face of shege and in the spirit of not yielding to anyone/anything.
What motivates you at your lowest?
“It’s just knowing what you want, and understanding that this is your journey and no one else’s. That’s what motivates me. I like focusing on the positives and the number of things I can spend my energy on, because no one knows tomorrow; that’s the beauty in life and also the scary thing about it, but I choose to focus on the beauty.”
What would be a benchmark of fulfillment for you?
“I think it would be becoming global. I don’t know how that can even be measured, but I see myself beyond walls. I don’t see my music in a certain country or space for certain people or even a certain community. I feel like people everywhere and anywhere should be able to connect with it and that’s my benchmark which is a really high benchmark, but I believe it can happen.”
“Whenever I put my mind to doing something, I get it done. God will not leave a hardworking person to answer someone that’s sleeping and that has been my orientation from day one. So I’m always working and I don’t hold back. I move to the next thing immediately – you know, recording and spending a lot of time in the studio.”
You once said something about how you think people do not celebrate you enough. Do you still feel like that?
Well, I got over that already. You know, sometimes you just feel like you’re not appreciated enough or people are not really giving you your accolades, but later on, I found out that the best accolade you can get is from yourself. It’s you at the end of the day. So I don’t wait for people to celebrate me, I do it myself. I celebrate myself.
“I take from the table, add something to what I take, and leave something for the future generation to take from.”
