“If being myself is a crime, then I am an outlaw.”
These were the words of Victony while granting an interview with Apple music. To Anthony Victor, profoundly known as Victony, being an outlaw means being immune from external voices that seem to dictate how his sound should be.
The self-acclaimed “Outlaw King” released his third studio project, ‘Outlaw’ under exclusive license to The Plug Entertainment. This release was met with mixed reactions from Victony’s supporters and music lovers at large. After scrutinous listening, this is DigiMillennials‘ take on the ‘Outlaw’ project.
Project starter, ‘Outlaw’ affirms Victony’s claim as a profound songwriter as he pens thought provoking lyrics on the emotional record. Judging by the lyrical depth, it is a song that might tell personal stories about the artist.
With ‘Chop & Slide’, Victony tells the tale of a toxic, yet mutual-understanding love triangle. Victony sings softly over bouncing kicks and piano chords orchestrated by producer Dera.
‘Apollo’ is an Amapiano madness. Victony and P.Priime beautifully combined their efforts to create a club-banger. ‘Apollo’ borrows melodies from South African DJ Clock‘s 2014 hit ‘Pluto’ yet sounds so original.
“All power belongs to your bum-bum” are Victony’s lustful words in ‘All Power’. The vibrant record sounds like a promising club banger capable of putting club-goers in a chokehold.
Hoodini-produced ‘Jolene’ falls next in line. The song is a feel-good one. It is groovy, catchy, and witty; just the right elements needed to make a record a hit one. It also has this Latina feel to it, which makes the song capable of crossing borders sonically.
Victony professes his love on ‘Soweto’ by singing in a calm tone, yet enforcing his love interest on a beautiful girl. The Tempoe-produced song is decent enough.
Soul! A lot of soul is evident in ‘Kolomental’, the last song on the project. ‘Kolomental’ is a heartfelt song with so many emotions. Victony’s smooth vocals, alongside sweet guitar loops and groovy percussive beats are the perfect recipe to this beautifully served sonic cuisine.
