Making her breakthrough with the Grammy-nominated song “Essence,” Tems has solidified herself as a musician and producer in the industry with her debut album, “Born In The Wild.”
Like her previous EPs, this 18-track album re-asserts Tems as the powerhouse she is. With a unique sound and style, it’s a testament to her musical prowess and a must-listen for any music enthusiast.
In an interview with Apple Music, Tems described this album as “her journey and experiences thus far.” She further described Lagos, where she was raised, as “the wilderness,” where she learned many lessons and became “this” person.
“I’ve had to step back a bit to make sure or to check in with myself that I’m being true and also just find healing from all the trauma. Everything I experienced before Tems, I think I had to unlearn many things. And this album is just a new way of me expressing myself while still centering who I am in it,” she said in the interview. This journey of self-discovery and personal growth is something we can all relate to, making the album even more inspiring and powerful.
“Born In The Wild” is an album about her experiences in the “wild”, which is Lagos, and her now-coming-out-of-that-wilderness journey, healing, learning, unlearning, and staying true to herself.
The 18-track album had features from Afrobeats’ cool kid, Asake, on the track titled “Get It Right”, a sweet, vibey Amapiano song, and a feature with the legendary J.Cole on the twelfth song. The interludes had the voices of her mother and managers.
P.S. From these interludes, it’s very safe to say people of wisdom surround Tems.
This album is one Temilade uses to express not only the vulnerability of her journey thus far but also to come to terms with her acceptance.
If "Hermother's Daughter" isn't talking about something she is passionate about, then she's writing it. She is always in her head space, majorly thinking about what to cook or bake (to be frank, eat).
