May was beautiful. Especially because of the almost uncountable number of public holidays it held, but this June is almost not any different. We made a list of days to look forward to this month, so that your laptop can rest. You chose this 9 to 5 life, not it.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day – June 24, 2023 (Quebec only)
Pause!
There’s no single public holiday in Canada for the month of June and it’s very upsetting. Unfortunately, owing to the fact that our country is not really working like that, we have to be matured in this relationship we have with Canada and work through it.
Fortunately for Quebec, they don’t really roll with the rest of us like that sometimes so they have Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
Democracy Day – June 12
The day the Nigerian military handed over power to an elected civilian government. Not to make this overly political, but has Naij ever even had an “elected” civilian government? As our Gen Z comrades would say, this whole thing has been “giving coup d’eltat vibes” for a long time, and we need baba God to save us from the clutches of nepotism.
Must we sacrifice ten virgins before they release us from this bondage? Even acknowledging Democracy Day as a public holiday feels silly, considering some of the fossils that were recently sworn in after the rather “stolen” election.
Eid al-Adha – evening of Wed, Jun 28, 2023 to evening of Sun, Jul 2
On a brighter note, Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice is the second and the larger of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam. It is also referred to as “Eid Al-kabir”, or in Hausa Babbar Sallah. It honours Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God’s command. It is celebrated on the 10th day of the Hijri month of Dhu al-Hijja.
It’s a beautiful time of celebration for Muslims.
So, make sure you reach out to all your brothers and sisters who practise Islam during this time and rekindle your friendships so that you too can eat small meat and be jolly during these trying times in this trying country. God bless.
