Everyone knows Victony the singer, but undoubtedly, not everyone knows Victony the rapper. If you fall under the latter category, you are not behind the curve, Victony the rapper has not been on the radar since 2020. At the time of writing, Victony’s latest song is “Skido”, a mid tempo afropop dance tune containing some of the singer’s inaudible vocal rendition featuring the legend, Olamide.
A quick flash back to 2019 when the singer still paced around the industry as an upcoming artist, industry stakeholders could have sworn Victony was on the pathway to scoring a successful rap career but the singer at some point embarked on making the most powerful switch that marked a renaissance in his history.
Victony the Rapper
In 2018, Victony released his official debut single “Ina the Benz” and a year later, “Menace”, his earliest single on major streaming platforms was released, followed by “2mins in Space with Dawy” and S.M.S (Sing My Song) featuring Zichy.
These early records were hiphop/pop records, no different from what a present day Blaqbonez or Ladipoe would have recorded. During this era, the now singer also let out rap covers of popular records on Soundcloud including Cardi b’s “Bodak Yellow”, Burna Boy’s “On The Low”, Tems’ “Try Me” and XXX Tentacion’s “Moonlight” amongst others.
A perfect deduction from this discovery is that Victony would have found success whether as a singer or a rapper. He has always had a distinctive artistic flair that would have given him an edge if he had decided to compete in the rap space. Unlike many new age rappers, Victony knew how to rap. His flow felt very natural and his bars very cognitive and edgy.
Saturn the EP
The “Saturn” EP was released in 2020. This is our first introduction to the Victony we now know and love. Saturn was a six track body of work with guest appearance from Falz. At this point, Victony had begun gathering his community and a self defining project was the perfect card after a successful year of singles and rap covers.
The EP was an afropop project that reflected a side of Victony that would have been tagged “foreign” or “explorative” at the time but this was Victony showing his community the new face he would be revealing to the world.
After the Silence
Sometime in 2021, Victony was involved in a ghastly car accident that tragically claimed the life of one of the passengers and left the singer and two others severely injured. He underwent surgery and was ridden to a wheelchair months afterwards. The period that followed this reflective phase of the singer’s life was deeply symbolic.
After a few months of being away from the media, recouping after the traumatic experience and the healing that followed, Victony returned with a two-pack single titled “Dark Times”. Two singles which reflected his longing for mental and emotional clarity. The records “Pray” and “Unfamiliar Realms” were produced by KTIZO and Blaize Beats. At this point, the sonic quality of his sound had improved beyond comparison therefore, “Pray” became his official breakout single before his collaboration with Mayorkun placed him on the national charts.
Outlaw, The Epic Collaborations
2021-2022 was the breakthrough period for Victony. The first score was the collaboration with Mayorkun on “Holy Father”. This was the record that introduced Victony to many of his core fans today. After gaining nationwide recognition through featuring on the number one song in the country at the time, the rollout to the Outlaw EP followed.
The EP contained tracks like Apollo, Kolomental and the record breaking collaboration with Nigerian producer Tempoe on “Soweto”.
At this point, Victony and fellow artists like Omah Lay, Asake had now been tagged the “New Gen” artists of afrobeats. One, for their new and reformative sounds, two, for their impressive impacts to the globalization of the afrobeats scene honing on the fact that they were all breakout stars.
Soweto’s virality was a strong footing to global recognition and his sonic authenticity. Victony’s vocals is characterized by light, high-falsetto, perfect fit for Tempoe’s production style – and together, both artists created a sound that transcended the scope of afrobeats music. The marketing was highly prepense — effective TikTok amplification and repurposing into various remixes to tap into collaborative markets.
The Debut
After Soweto’s surging popularity, Victony would go ahead to release a number of singles that would perform brilliantly, locally and internationally. My Darling, Ohema, Everything and Jaga Jaga are some notable mentions. Before the summer of 2024, Victony recounted how Nigerian rapper Olamide compelled him to take the bold step of releasing an album.
A few weeks later, around June of 2025, “Stubborn”, his debut studio album was released. The album featured amazing collaborations with Asake, Teezo Touchdown, Shallipopi and more. The album was a bold fusion of genres, apart from being a success, it signified Victony’s artistic intelligence in expressing the resourcefulness of afrobeats music in embodying different cultural sounds.
Victony’s story is one of survival transformed into art. From early rap covers, through a life-threatening crash, to global streaming success, his evolution is personal and profound. Victony reminds us that the most powerful records are the ones that feel lived-in.
His most defining chapter might still be ahead, with his coming “Very Stubborn” project. For now, the “Outlaw” has turned the story into sound.
