Abuja’s afro-fusion virtuoso Suté Iwar presents ‘SPACE COWBOY’, a blistering slice of cosmic R&B light years ahead of its time, and the second single from his forthcoming debut album ULTRALIGHT, dropping early 2023 via London and Johannesburg based label Outer South.
Mixed by Sam Harper (Wizkid, NSG, Tion Wayne) and mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery Studio, on ‘SPACE COWBOY’ Suté spins a tale of interstellar romance and desire, as he and his girl breeze through galaxies and wastelands in a dreamy flow state.
Showing his versatility by switching between lilting harmonies and quick-fire bars, Suté pays homage to Japanese animé series COWBOY BEBOP, alongside a verse from the man with no misses, Tim Lyre, tipped by TIDAL as One to Watch in 2023.
It follows ‘JUDAH LION’, his recent collaboration with WurlD, which premiered on The Dotty Show on Apple Music, featured on Spotify’s global R&B Weekly playlist, and secured heavy airplay across Nigeria, reaching #15 on The Beat FM’s charts.
In Suté’s words: “I wrote ‘Space Cowboy’ as an anthem for self-assurance and connection. The lyrics are a reflection of my own confidence in my ability to navigate life’s ups and downs, and my belief in the power of finding the right person to share those experiences with. I wanted to convey the feeling of flying and reclining, as well as the idea of fun and playfulness. I hope that this song not only makes people want to move and swing but also reminds them that they are capable and strong, and that they deserve to find the right person to share this journey with.”
In the coming weeks, Suté will unveil his debut album ULTRALIGHT, which features a star-studded lineup from West African and British talent, including Lex Amor, Kadiata, Raytheboffin, Tay Iwar, and Twelve XII.
Itty can be caught studying African pop culture, writing about it or hosting a relationship podcast. When he's not doing any of these, then he's definitely at a bar, getting mocktail.
