Don Toliver’s latest project is one we can describe as a sensual, psychedelic album. The album contains twenty songs which create a feeling of love and nostalgia all drowned in fun, drugs and living in the moment. Don creatively made every single song on that album for the love season or rather, every single individual under the love umbrella at any given point.
From paying homage to and appreciating strippers for their hustle in ‘No Pole’, to the “love highness” of ‘Geronimo’, down to ‘Luckily I’m Having’ fun, the ability to live in the moment is very much celebrated.
‘4 Me’ displays Don’s ability to switch it up, a deviation from the rap norm to an R&B serenade assisted by Kali Uchis. It’s interesting to observe the affluence of artists these days exploring love and creativity in their respective genres. Don’s album is one that brings premium rap and love together for an hour-long experience.
Dreamy chords drift over the synths and percussions in ‘Leather Coat’, Don talks about a love he once neglected but is now ready for. The beat switches after the hook to a more morose tone, those dreamy chords now replaced by a heavy bass over which Don delivers a solemn rendition.
The braggadocious tone of ‘Private Landing’ coupled with the beat smells hard trap which was quite shocking to see Justin Bieber as a feature, but he does well to keep the theme trapping alongside Don and Future which we consider to be an incredible collaboration.
Afrobeats triumphs again with influence as Wizkid is found on track ‘Slow Motion’ which fuses pop beats with his afro-style; creating a sensual experience. Wizkid’s verse on this record sort of feels like an extension of his ‘Made In Lagos’ album’s sonic style.
Working with a number of notable names like Travis Scott, Brent Faiyaz and so on, Don ensures to mix the moods in this album which perfectly paints a picture of what love really is – a congregation of multiple emotions, a journey filled with ups and downs, and a disruptive-yet-pleasurable exchange.
If "Hermother's Daughter" isn't talking about something she is passionate about, then she's writing it. She is always in her head space, majorly thinking about what to cook or bake (to be frank, eat).
