Thanks to Canada being a bit of an ashawo, the Great White North has a lot more diversity in cuisine than one might ordinarily expect. There are well established cuisines from around the world that would surprise you. Let’s take a quick look at some of the strongest and most interesting cuisines that make up Canadian culture.
Jamaican
Generally, the consensus is that buying Jamaican food is almost like buying amala — the more disrespectful the woman selling it is, the better the food. Nobody does Oxtail better than Jamaicans and we’re grateful to them. Toronto would be nowhere without Jamaican restaurants and we humbly give shout-out to them and their forefathers.
Korean
Honestly there’s probably juju inside Korean fried chicken, but we don’t mind. Nobody does it better than they do. Korean fried chicken has always been that girl, without argument. But let’s not get distracted here, there are many incredible things about Korean cuisine and one of such things is Korean barbecue which generally involves barbecuing your own food. If you haven’t tried it, we highly recommend going with friends as it’s the perfect way to enjoy group outings and experience Korean culture.
Indian
Most Nigerians would probably say this is the strongest fighter on this list. They have the most similar palate to the Nigerian palate, and probably about the same spice tolerance. It is often said that Chicken Biriyani and Jollof rice are brother and sister. Whether or not this is true, you will never be disappointed with Indian food. This cuisine excels particularly in the street food department — nobody does it better than them, not even Nigerians. Thai
Think of Thai food as that quiet person that surprises you with how witty they are the day they finally open their mouth. Thai food is nuanced and flavourful in ways that you might not expect to like, especially if you’re operating with a Nigerian palate. Thai Green Curry is usually a good starting point that we’d like to recommend for those of you that have taste. On the flip side, we recommend Pad Thai noodles for those of you that are criminals — which is most people, really.
Chinese
This one stands as one of the most popular ethnic cuisines in the country, and in most countries as well, with good reason. This is a culture that has spread its ministry far and wide around the globe. One peculiar thing about Chinese cuisine is that it’s one of those places that gives guests a further glance into their culture beyond the food. The attention to detail that often exists even with the inclusion of the smallest touches like fortune cookies is wonderful.
Italian
One thing Italians are going to do for sure is start a restaurant. Most countries have a thriving market where Italian restaurants are concerned. There’s a lot of diversity even within Italian cuisine which often varies from low end high in terms of price ranges. So they will definitely always have pasta that will fit your budget.. We know you didn’t ask, but Vagabondo Restobar in Toronto has some of the best Italian food in the city. Don’t say we’ve never put you on!
